About Mitsuyo Mori
Mitsuyo Mori came to the United states in 1981 after she worked in oil on canvas for ten years in Japan. A year later she switched to water-based media in San Francisco where she lived at the time. She moved to New York in 1984 where she discovered that ink, watercolor and acrylic paint are exciting media and she began to use them for most of her experimental work due to their flexibility and ease.
The Sumi and India ink paintings shown on this site are created from an improvisational approach. She meditates on a sheet of paper in front of her, while grinding the ink stick onto the stone. Her first brush stroke determines the flow of the painting. Sometimes you will find wrinkles on these Sumi ink works. This is a result of the pressure from Mitsuyo's brush work. You can feel her powerful brush touches in the strokes.
India ink is normally painted on water color paper; however, she prefers non-absorbent translucent sheets because of the interesting effects that are possible.
